Spare Track (or some cutter) Me Brother?

J Matthes

I'm building the DML Stug III G and I want to add some field applied mods, namely the spare track/side armor. Simple and effective bit of construction using the kit indies and some strip styrene. Please keep in mind that the entire bracket is less than two inches long.

After painting and Future-ing the hull, I sprayed all the tracks and brackets with a mix of Tamiya Acrylic XF-1, XF-64 and X-10 (40%, 40% and 20% respectively). I love this recipe, given to me by a good mate of mine. It may look a bit odd at the moment, but it get's better, trust me.

Next, we grab a few OLD brushes.

Some dry pigments and Iso alcohol. I prefer to mix three rust shades into a slurry.

Simply add this mix to the links and bracket. Be careful to not apply pressure, the Iso will melt into the paint and too much agitation while wet will remove the basecost itself. You can see how it flattens out the paint, lessening the glittery appearance.

This particular subject is getting a worn whitewash treatment so I first apply thinned Vallejo White.

When dry, rub off using a wet bristle brush.

After taking a quick look, I add more white in the recesses where it is likely to settle and last longer than other areas.

Next to touch up some more rust spots with pigments that were lost with the last rub off.

I could probably stop here, but I want it to look more worn on this StuG, so one final rub to blend.

I'll wait until the rest of the hull is done to do a final tie in. I'll also most likely hang some helmets and equipment off of these links so for balance sake, it's complete for now.
